This was the first one I have attended and I was very happy I did. Dr. Ken Miller was the speaker for the topic "God, Darwin and Global Warming, does science really matter in America today?". Luckily he didn't waste any time on global warming and spent the bulk of time on science and religion. He also took quite a few questions on a variety of subjects. I was very impressed with his overall knowledge from religion, cellular biology and the cosmos. He obviously is an academic which in this case isn't a bad thing. He wasn't stuffy or arrogant at all.

This was obviously a very hot topic since Semolino's ended up being standing room only. I was very proud of Hays Kansas that a topic like this could be discussed in public without a religious picket line or something of the sort. The most important fact that came out of the evening was that scientists do a horrible job of selling their "Facts". Examples: Evolution is no longer a theory, it is a fact. Another, the earth is not 6,000 years old like a very popular children's story likes to tell.

Dr. Miller also made it clear that we should pay attention to who our state representatives are to avoid what happened with the Kansas state school board earlier in the decade. If you don't know what happened you need to watch "Flock of the Dodos" which is a fantastic non biased look at science and religion in schools. This was even more interesting considering Dr. miller is also a religious man and he understands how dangerous the teaching of creationism in schools is. He doesn’t believe science and faith can’t go hand in hand. I can see that point of view as long as religion doesn’t try to pass itself off as science. The idea of science is to test an idea until you can prove it therefore making it fact. Faith and religion have no way of being proven so therefore it cannot be science, therefore it shouldn’t be taught in schools.

Dr. Miller has been on various television shows over then years including The Colbert Report. Click here for the first time he was on the show. This link will take you to is latest appearance.

Lasik was a Success

Although getting my eyeball suctioned to the point of broken blood vessels wasn’t fun at least it’s over. The only real negative for the day was the heat. From the beginning it was terribly hot with a high temp around 104 degrees. It was very difficult dealing with the heat and very little wind but I was impressed that so many people stayed and competed. From what I know we only lost one player due to dehydration and he actually had to go to the hospital for an IV. Now that is true dedication and toughness.

Now for the winners…

1st Place Singles – Ramon Lazano
2nd Place Singles – Taylor Ermoian

1st Place Doubles – Shawn Clark & Luckily I ran across a new Documentary on HBO called.. Kevorkian. Yes it’s exactly what you think, Jack Kevorkian. Most people simply see him as a Dr. who helped people end their lives. He is much more than that and I have a new respect for him. I always liked what he was doing simply because I want that freedom and support if I ever need help at the end of my life.

Jack is a very, very intelligent man who isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said. He also went to prison intentionally to prove a point. The downside is that it didn’t end up like he had hoped but his actions have at least caused some debate. Without getting into the morality of what he did which would end up being a religious debate all I will say is watch this documentary.

Great Point of view

I am a huge fan of Penn Jillette and his new podcast on Revision 3 is fantastic. As usual with my posts… you are warned. The language can be rough but that is our right as Americans. I am not a fan of our government and I am even less of a fan of our two party system.. it is broken. Penn’s recent podcast is filled with common sense and we should all listen.

Let me be clear… this is not a pro Obama podcast. It is an anti government podcast so don’t let the graphic below throw you.

Get Him to the greek… Great Movie

Mandee and I went to the movie theater for the first time in months this last weekend. I talked her into going to Get Him to the Greek and even she loved it. Very funny and I truly hope they continue with the Aldous Snow character (previously Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Russell Brand is ridiculously funny and has found his niche with this character. I am guessing it is pretty much who he is in real life and man what a life.

I was a little surprised Jonah Hill (Seth from Superbad) can keep up with Brand in the comedy department, but he did. I even have to give props to P.
